Perhaps a presage, in early February of this year – amid stagnating sales – Organigram ($OGI) said goodbye to one of its’ first employees – their Senior Vice President of Operations, Matt Rogers – as he sought to pursue ‘other interests’.
Four months and an executive search later – today we find out Beena Goldenberg has accepted the big chair at the outfit.
I like her. A lot. Why?
Long time readers will know of my disdain for the frat party Supreme had become – burning $300MM in capital (and probably as many pounds of ‘the dank’ doing it), and taking the company right to the edge. We saw them driving past ‘End of Road’ signs 2 years ago – and sure as heck – not more than one month later…….then ‘Chief Advocacy Officer’ John Fowler was shown the door.
<I guess John Fowler had aspired all along to be a Jay-Z-ish type of figure in the industry. He’d transitioned out of the CEO role months earlier, and had installed a muppet <I emptied a full clip on that guy here.> And in a few short months, the muppet went out the door too.
An interim CEO did some initial pressure washing – shedding staff and clearing the decks (this is a relatively common way to begin wholesale change – one doesn’t want a new CEO seen as wearing a black hat on the first day they walk into a place).
Enter Beena Goldenberg. Over the next 12 months, she went top to bottom on the place, and scoured it. She got costs down, reconstituted the capital structure, and I became a fanboy of hers. These things are not an easy thing to do. Nor, is it easy to find someone who’ll do that kind of heavy lifting in a high risk environ/sector. Seriously.
Well, I’ll easily say that she isn’t one to shy away from a challenge, and $OGI definitely qualifies, writ large. With BAT’s R&D investment in $OGI, she can likely get away from some of the scrounging she’d had to do at Supreme to attract capital – and I suspect her success there will port right into her – and $OGI’s – reputation.
$OGI has just become interesting to me again, time to get back to Structures on them, and see what we can see what’s in front of her.
