Quick Seeds
I’ve been farting around with new genetics.
Not any from people I know in the Canadian industry, but from outside. ‘Quick seeds’.
So, to orient: ‘ruderalis’ is a non-photoperiod dependent cultivar of cannabis.
For those who don’t grow, ‘cannabis’ is a flowering annual. Which means, the plant ‘vegetates’ (grows) until it flowers. The plant, when mature – usually 8-10 weeks from seed – is shortened from a 16/8 light cycle, to 12/12.
That means, instead of 16 hours of daylight & 8 hours darkness, we give the plant 12/12 hours of dark, and light. This induces flowering. The plant puts out colas, consumers are happy, everyone is happy.
With ruderalis, it doesn’t need to be ‘blacked out’. The typical photoperiod dependent plant needs ‘blackout’ – especially when flowering. Light leaks stress plants out, and can induce the plant to self sex (grow balls) and attempt to self-pollinate. It’s a bad situation for any grower trying to grow flower.
If you have traditional cannabis growing: you need to have blackout periods where the plants have no light.
In a greenhouse – that means curtains. Or other countermeasures to make sure there is a dark period.
With ruderalis, don’t matter. Auto’s (ruderalis are also known as ‘auto flowers’) can grow on a 20/4 schedule. As their name suggests, they don’t need inducement (or light changes) to flower. They do it automatically.
My farting around?
There’s 2 reasons why auto’s are useful.
- They don’t need light deprivation
- They flower faster than photo-period dependent plants
I’ve been selected as a tester for some ‘quick’ seeds. They are cannabis seeds that are photo period dependent, but, have the ruderalis fast ripening trait. It’s the inverse of the auto: it promises traditional cannabis, but of the #2 trait of the ruderalis.
I’ll blog this all up. The promise is huge.
And if it bears out, it’ll bring a whole new realm to growers. Instead of 4 turns per year, one can get 6.
Good times.
